I have two V10 15 passenger ford vans. 2002 and 2005 models. They are basically identical accept one van makes a lot more road noise on the same highway as the other one. The 2005 is the noisy one. They both have the same tires, same tread. But in the drivers seat of the two there is a lot more tire noise on the 2005. I have put some foam padding for sound insulation in the fender cavity but no difference and used rubber spray insulation on the inside of the cavity too. Just wondered what you guys have found that works for wind and road noise. I have owned these two vans for hundreds of thousands of miles and this has never changed. Any recommendations on tires, I have used Firestone TransForce Highway tires and they seem to be the quietest, amazingly Michelin LTX are M/S tread and after a while they make more noise than the Firestone. They are both XLT models, thanks
As the tire ages, it loses elasticity and transfer more noise. Other thing to check:
* Pop out windows. they can loosen up and not seal quite well, specially at speed. They can be tightened up.
* Quality / condition of the door seals. I run latex medical tubing inside the seals on my old van. I need to do it on my new one.
* Adjust the door latches to close as tight as possible. Rusted bolts may make this close to impossible or you may end up with a loose latch and unable to tight it back, be careful.
* Dog house seals and latches.
* Suspension bushings worn out.
If more people chime in with trick, this may be a useful source of ideas.
