Power Steering Stops Working Warm
I have a '76 highboy with power assist steering. To reduce leaking in the system I've replaced the control valve and power cylinder. When my power steering works it works great, but it is starting to go out on me after I drive it for a while. I am attributing it to once the engine is hot and has been driving for a while that is when the power assist stops, but that could just be a red herring. I assume I just need to bite the bullet and get a new power steering pump, but I'd like to know why it is behaving the way that it is. Anybody have this problem before?
Also, is it recommended to rebuild the power steering pump, use an autozone pump, or is it worth it to fork out the extra dough for a quality rebuilt one?

In general, a pump either works or it doesn't and when they don't they whine. The only way to know for absolute sure is to put a psi gage in the h.p. line and see what you got. If you want to change it they are dirt cheep so they are not worth trying to rebuild.

Update: I guess it failing when it was warm was just the early signs of complete pump failure. After I posted my original question it started to not have power assist even when cold. So I replaced the pump and everything seems to be working well. My theory is when the ATF Type F warmed up it thinned up to the point where it was easier to flow though internal leaks and lose pressure. Who knows if that is correct, but at the end of the day replacing the pumped worked and I'm happy. Thanks.
