1997 V10 engine replacement - Need Recommendations
Going into Ford E350 Cutaway Chassis motorhome. 10,700 GVWR. E40D trans, 4.10 rear.
Any recommendations?
Ford's engines arrive fully broken in, full of oil with a new oil cooler, filter and rail, all gaskets and their cheaper exhaust studs and nuts---I purchased separately the stainless steel versions with washers. Talking with Ford's power train customer support person I learned their engines are built to be installed at a dealership and after basically handed over to the owner and driven "normally" without any real break-in periods. I shared I'd run the first 200 miles and change oil/filter--they didn't disagree but said even that wasn't necessary.
Ford does highly recommend IF the engine failed from anything that would possibly allow metal fragments into the intake that it too should be replaced with a new part. Not sure about the 6.8's but 5.4's have a plastic intake, the metal fragments cannot be effectively cleaned out---they'll stick in the plastic and eventually work themselves loose. If such a condition were observed during warranty claims that's reason enough to nullify the 3 year 100K mile warranty. BTW they do ask for your VIN supposedly to confirm you received the correct engine for your chassis---I get the feeling its to start a paper trail which isn't a bad thing in this case.

I did replace all 8 injectors as six were cracked---couldn't see leaving them as is or replacing just the damaged parts. The throttle body needs cleaned--I have a rough idle and nothing shows up on my rather limited Actron scanner. That's easy enough to do, so it'll be DIY.
I think or believe the V10's go for about $3800 plus at least an $800 core--I paid $3050 for my V8. Jasper was close but my friend who sells and installs them didn't leave me with a good impression which I formed from our conversation. He regularly installs them and wouldn't recommend something he can't stand behind. Not sure what turned me against Jasper and I'm not unhappy with my choice.
So that's my story---good luck with your project!
I was lucky with my installer as it was a side job from his dad's heavy truck shop---he called me whenever something should be replaced and I'd bring the new parts same day or next at latest. I didn't want him waiting for me.
