300 Engine Removal Help

Looking for either some tips or just what I am doing wrong.

I have a fresh rebuilt 300 that I trying to swap out with my current 300. I am in the process of the swap. Front clip is all off, everything is disconnected and or removed including manifolds etc. Basically all that is in the truck is the block/head/v cover and the trans. It is a 4 speed. I have removed the mount and the bolt in cross member.

For the life of me I cannot tetris the motor and trans out. I get to the point where the bottom of the trans is hitting the middle cross member and the top of the trans where the shifter inserts is wedged up against the front of the tunnel in the cab.

I can not get the trans low enough to get the top shift collar out of the floor and or high enough to get the trans to clear the cross member. I get the motor up in the air but then at a certain point just get into a bind on the trans.

What am I doing wrong or does the 4 speed always have to be unbolted and removed out the bottom?

Thanks for the help.

The trans can stay hooked up, but if I remember correctly on mine, (70 f100 with a 300 and a four speed) you have to take the top cover off the trans to get it to clear the floor. I put mine in with the trans hooked up and took it out of the parts truck with the trans hooked up as well.

That is what I was afraid of, but I have also heard the top cover on the 4 speed is extremely particular and a real pain to get back on.

My other thought was is now would be a good time to do cab mounts. Would the extra few inches of jacking up the front of the cab to change the bushings be enough to get the trans out in one piece.

Probably would be enough room. I dont remember how much room i was lacking on mine so you'd just have to see for yourself. I've never had any trouble getting the top of the trans back on and i've had it off more than a few times. Either way will probably work.

Engine removal

It would be a good time to cut the rivets holding the crossmember, that way it be easier to R&R the engine and transmission. You will not be able to raise the front of the cab too much if the bed is still in place to replace the body mounts. I just went through all of that.

The bed is off as well, just finished an axle flip, new brakes, painted the frame etc etc. But good idea on changing the rivets to bolts that way the engine and trans can be removed later without all this extra tear down.
