I have an air/fuel gauge in the cab but find it mostly usless on a carb engine.

For setting up fuel injection I found it to be invaluable to have the controller under the hood for the first rounds of tuning and even beyond when I was playing around with some new settings. Another idea; I wonder if you could create a diagnostic cart with all the relevant gauges you could plug into ready sending units?

Dont let people’s reactions get you down. When some have not heard of doing “X” before their reactions are not always becoming or even thoughtful. I just move along from these fellas. “A junkyard serpentine system for an 351M/400? Bhaaa, never heard of it, can’t be done.”

Actually the only need one would have for an A/F meter would be on a carbureted engine. An injected engine is constantly and precisely adjusting the fuel/ai4 ratio. Unless you are setting up the carb for cruise and power, yes an A/F meter is indeed pretty much useless.

As they say, "There is/should be an app for that."
Imagine an app for your sorta smart phone that receives all of your vehicle's vitals transmitted via WiFi or BlueTooth. Temporarily mount that device in the cab or under the hood or wherever else you might need it. The data will be there for you to see. Moreover, there is the possibility of archiving that data.

Zactly. I was waiting for the punchline to that joke, but I guess it wasn't a joke

I came in here to make this exact suggestion. I like the idea of having some of this information readily accessible under the hood (where applicable), but kind of a bummer to have it tethered to one vehicle.

Also this. Some great ideas have probably never come to fruition because of this sort of thing.

This exists for OBDII vehicles. Suppose if you were to do it on an older rig you may be left with having to install the sensors and whatnot to collect the data, although it wouldn't necessarily be critical for vehicle operation like it is on something newer. Hmm...

Most aftermarket fuel injection systems are tuneable, some have to be tuned. That's where an A?F guage would be usefull. On my highle modified carb engine it read rich almost al; the time.

I actually have that. For OBD2. The reader is cheap, the basic app is free!

RE: The app-idea.

I've thought about building something like this for myself but haven't made the time just yet. I'm a web developer/programmer with an IT background in systems/network monitoring so it's definitely in my wheelhouse. I imagine a kit with the basic sensors for fluid levels/temperatures, A/F ratio, fuel-pressure, and actually logging that information to see how it correlates with speed, ambient air temperature, and whatever other factors are related. I have a couple Arduino boards gathering dust and am using Python a lot more lately so maybe this will be a project for the winter.

With that said, these guys sell a kit: Welcome To Daytona Sensors?
