I've looked through 55 pages of old posts and couldn't find one that exactaly matched my problem. '95 f-150, 351, new fuel pumps,(40 psi),new relay for pumps and ecm, new msd coil, new plugs and msd wires, dist. cap and rotor, new ignition module(the one on the fender wall, is there one in the distributer too?) took to dealer only code they came up with was o2 sensors, replaced them check light went out, fresh air filter,. Truck will not start sometimes, been doing the problem for about a year, does it for awhile then is fine for a month or two then acts up again. If i leave the key in run for 5 minutes to an hour or so sometimes it will start, ( i hear the fuel pumps prime the system again and thats when i know to try it, ususaly will start after that) when i replaced the fuel pumps it started right up then the next day it wouldn't start again. when i replaced the coil same thing happened. started fine for a couple of hours then wouldn't start till the next day. was trying all wires and conections today with no luck, then all of a sudden it started and ran fine all day, then was driving to the store and it just died and wouldn't start for 20 minutes. then started and drove home no problem. it's driving me crazy please help. going to check ground wires today. could it be spout? where is that any way? what about egr? Thanks in advace for any and all help.
Intermittent problems like this are the bane of a mechanics existance. Usually it is a loose wire and not a faulty component. Its not EGR, that would not cause what you describe. Also the spout connector wouldn't do what you describe.
Make sure you are getting the big three: Air, fuel, and spark. Whichever one you are missing is where you want to investigate.
We'll assume spark is missing. Get a DMM and start tracing the system.
What year is it? If it has the module on the distributer, this CAN cause these symptoms. If there is a connector plugged into something below (not in) the dist. cap, then it does have the module there. To replace, you either need to buy the special tool or do what I did, grind a deep well socket so it has thinner walls.
Good luck

1995 does have module on distributor.
DMM=Digital Multi-Meter something that can measure resitance, voltage and current both AC and DC.
Use it to detect electrical signals. If you need more explanation than that, then you really need a good manual and a friend to help.
Spark may be intermittent enough to showup sometimes. You need to see a good solid spark every other rotation. I'd say the "ignitor" module on the dist is your best bet. Someone here knows what it is really called, I just can't remember.
LAST EDITED ON 13-Jul-01 AT 06:07 PM (EST)[p]On the 95 the TFI module is on the firewall or fenderwell its built into a huge cast aluminum heatsink, this was fords attempt to keep it cool after they removed it from its former home on the distrutor, he said he replaced that but when you replace that you must also replace the stator inside the distributor or it might cause the module to go bad
Added on edit, The auto consumers have taken the tfi module debacle one step further and have decided to file a class action lawsuit aginst ford, Other states are will probably follow suit
ok i'm with you on the DMM now rgaz, just a lil case of brain fade. yes otto thats the one i changed, are you saying that eventhough i changed it the one in the distributor could have caused it to go bad already?
Sorry it took so long to get back to you all. DING DING DING OTTO is the big winner on this one it was the stator in the distributor. Thanks for you help. Hopefully I wont have to post again soon but if I do I know where to come for help.
