i just pulled the axels out of my f150 and it had tapered bearings in the axels. I have tried to get a new axels and third member at the local salvage yard and all they have is ball bearing axels is there much or any difference in the two or is one better?
I don't think there's a big difference unless your bearings have a different OD. Did your bearing come out complete or did the cup(race) stay in the housing? I think I've used both style bearings (***** and tapers) in my 9" at one point.
I have been down this road also. I believe the tapered rollers are better. The trade out in my mind is decreased side thrust load with the ball Vs. greater load bearing area with the tapered roller. The axles should be identical, but the retainer is (to best of my recollection) different. Reuse the old retainer. I expect you have fiqured out by now it takes something like a 40 ton press and a good operator to R & R these pieces. I believe that most design changes are made by the bean counters and therefore, the original design was, most likely, superior, but I'm just cynical. (sp?) What happened to the axles to require replacement?
I think the guy that had it before ran it out of oil. The ring and pinnion is pited prety good the pinnion shaft pilot brg was out and the axle splines and spider gear splines are wore prety bad! I have another axle with diferent ratio 3.00:1 (I have 3.50:1) it uses the ball brgs and and there not quite the same axle as the taperd roller axle. The housing's are the same.
