Chains for 2018 STX

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1557350-295-65r20-with-tire-chains.html

Thinking about snow chains for my 2018 STX.

I read this thread; wondering if there is anything new on front tire use of chains.

I'd only use them to get me out of the woods and back onto the highway.

My tire size: LT-275/70R18E

I've chained the front tires on my civilian 4WD vehicles 6 or 7 times in the last 18 years; much more control than chaining rear tires only.

Any words of wisdom?

Yeah, Ford says don't do it. Chains put a lot of stress on driveline components, especially the steering front end which is weaker to begin with.

Chaining the rears is basically a waste of time. JMHO

"only use them to get out of the woods" is exactly what chains are intended for on a SD, IMO. In other words, emergency type situations. I'd try keep it slow and not worry too much about stressing components.

Chains will really get you out of a jam, but they do have a cost. They can take a toll on rims, body work and driveline. But like in the other thread, that’s your choice, and when you need them, if you have them I would use them too. I have never had to use chains on a truck or car, but I don’t hunt anymore and I don’t cruise the FSR for firewood any more in the snow either. Just remember on the front tires, don’t steer lock to lock hard and keep the wheel speed as low as possible.

I fully agree. When you need them "YOU NEED THEM." As long as you go slow and don't go lock to lock you will probably be OK. I carry a set for all 4 wheels in my truck for when the big snow hits.
