Gas Tank Relocation

What’s the best way to mount an after market gas tank when relocating from the cab to under the frame? Should I strap it up or mount it directly to the frame? Pros vs cons?

Hey Dano, I don't know what the best way is but my buddy and I are in the process of bolting a '66 Mustang tank to the frame of my truck. We did have to use 3/4" spacers because the top of the tank was hitting the frame. ~Pat

I fabbed a rectangular tube box frame and slid it in from the rear into the “U” channel of the truck frame. Really access feasibility doesn’t make any difference since the tank is set up for FI and I would have to lift the bed to access fuel and return line connections no matter what. I wanted the tank (22 gal mustang) to sit up into the frame as high as possible. There are several threads here on FTE with tank mounting suggestions.

I should add I went with a 16 gal tank. I think tucking it up into the frame would be best but I didn't want to remove the rear most cross member to do it.

This is a very timely thread for me because yesterday I pulled to tank out of my '65 that I purchased a month ago. I am doing a complete brake system replacement and had some down time waiting for some parts. So I decided to pull the tank out (it smelled inside the cab to high heaven). Well I was shocked to find the tank had rusted thought in several places. See pic
Now I think I will look at putting a tank between the frame in the rear. I need to keep this as simple as possible. I will look for other threads however if someone already knows of a good thread with pics please post it.

Holy Smokes, I'm going to guess that you're not a smoker. I think if you were you would have gone up in flames. Good thing you found that before something bad happened... ~Pat

You might also consider researching your fuel pump options. The factory pump may have trouble pulling fuel from the back, so you might consider an in tank pump.

Never heard of that with any engine mounted pump.

What motors are they running?
If 240/300 six or say a 302 all of the trucks them motors came in also had rear mounted tanks.
The 292/312 was in cars with rear mounted tanks.
So what made you say what you did?

I have test fitted a 92 f150 side tank under my 66, it looks like it will fit in the same location ( inside the frame) as the 92.

How about some pics of your 92 side tank. I did a quick measurement under my 66 today and it looks like I could come up with a 26x26 space by moving one brace forward. This was a quick rough measurement.
thanks

Some thing to keep in mind on side tanks the later ones, think after 86, could have electric fuel pumps so the opening would be large and some of the senders work backwards from early ones.

Also you have 16 gallon short bed and a 19 gallon long bed tank.
I have 1 of each for my 81 F100 and can tell you the diameter are the same just the laenth is different.
On my short bed there was no way to use the long bed tank so I added the 19 gallon rear tank from parts truck to my flare side.

What year mustang tank has a 22 gallon capacity and electric fuel pump? I considered a mustang tank but models I looked up were only like 16 gal or so. But I didn't look too hard after I saw the smaller tank. I was hoping to go with a tank at least 20 gallons. I was going to attempt a bronco tank between the frame rails but haven't had time to work on that angle just yet. I have a 95 F150 with a rear tank but I think it is a 19 gallon and I would really like to go bigger. I have to stop for gas too much as it is. If I could squeeze a 25-30 gal tank under my 65 it would be great! Just afraid a tank near 30 gal would hang down too much?

I believe it is the 16 gallon version, it is shorter than the one on our 93 long bed side tank Looks like it might be tight around the parking brake cable, but doable.. I was going to use the sending unit with it by removing the pump and adding a tube with a sock on it.My cousin did this with the back tank from the same truck on his 86 Dodge pro street truck.I was wondering about the gauge, thanks for the answer.

I like that mustang tank except for the rear fill. How will that work on your truck? Fill between tailgate and bumper, or thru the bed floor?
