I have used brake parts cleaners in a spray can with good results.

I remember that! I still call it that. first got here in 1961 and things are much better here than they were back then. The people here finally came to realize that this city is supported by the Navy. Without it, there would not be much here.

I took this starter apart and brushes are down to nothing and the commutator should be cut . The solenoid plunger has spring action.

Chumbucket,
From an electrical rebuilders standpoint, I use mineral spirits, cost is less than $2.00 per gallon and has a higher flash point of cleaning products in the petroleum base, you talk about taking the starter apart and seeing worn parts, is it a direct drive or a permanent magnet gear reduction starter? it would help to know to tell you what to do from this point. broken wire

Chumbucket,
the three little gears makes it a permanent magnet gear reduction.( PMGR)
Basically what I do with this unit is beadblast the field case and drive end housing. taking off the corrosion, replace the brush rig assembly, (set aside the old brush rig that removed from the starter and rebuild at a later date), if the commutator has been severly arced or the comm has a puddle of copper on the commutator bar, I replace the armature, cutting the comm on this armature is a touch and go situation, several reasons why not to recut comm, mainly reasons can be found once you try to true the comm. a clean comm is just as important a a true comm. replace the solenoid, since it is not cost effective for a one man shop to disect the solenoid and put it back together with a new cap and contacts. By the way, don't wash out the inside of the solenoid assembly, you can clean everything else except the inside of the solenoid, wipe it out if it must be cleaned, a local rebuild shop may be able to help you with the parts or check here on this web site for a replacement unit chumbucket.

Chumbucket,
I use a silicone grease, I buy it in a one pound container, white lithium should work ok though, a small tube from Wally World or the parts store should be easily found, or ask a good auto store about silicone grease, not to thick but yet it should not be runny. About the consistency of dielectric grease. Hope this helps.
