I have a Ford F150 1995 Eddie Bauer Edition. Recently I decided to use my back tank to run off. A few days after I started using it, I noticed the gas gauge said I only had 1/2 a tank of gas left. Then a day after that, gas was pouring out of the front tank. Basically, the gas from the back tank was running into the front tank and overflowing! I took it to Ford and they told me to replace both fuel pumps. I would like a second opinion from you folks who aren't out trying to get an extra buck. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
I just rec'd a letter from Ford, recalling my truck for the same problem. It is called Extended Coverage Program 01M05 and it is no cost to you. What you have is called a cross flow condition and it is caused by a damaged check valve in the fuel pump/sender. This was to have been corrected under a previous recall, # 93S68, but even if that was performed and you are still having the problem, they will fix this free.
My letter indicates that this covers your truck from 12 years or 150,000 miles. They go on to say, that they will extend coverage to 12/31/01 if your truck has over 150,000 miles.
Don't pay for this! Ford is covering it.
Make that service writer looks up this recall campaign. This is why I always let the Manufacturer know I am the new owner of a used vehicle, they still send you this valuable info.

Well, at least Ford is addressing this problem with a recall for some year model trucks. You are right, the check valve in the FRONT tank is shot...that's why it overflows...fuel that is supposed to be returning to your back tank is going in the front instead. If the official recall doesn't solve your problem (I never got any good out of Ford for this), you are looking at a new fuel pump in the tank that overflows. The pump will set you back about $200, but it ain't a hard job to do. Some say drop the tank to gain access the pump, but I've done both front and rear and taking the bed off is much easier that wrasslin an empty fuel tank on your back in the driveway. Have a shop loosen the nuts on your bed bolts, then go under the truck and remove the nuts and bolts. Now take your tailgate off and set it aside. Disconnect your taillights at the plug and tape one end to the frame and the other to the bumper. Loosen the filler hose clamps on both fuel tanks. Now get a buddy to help you lift and slide the bed back about 1.5 to 2 feet. Now you can get to the front pump. Find your fuel pump cutoff switch (mine is up under the dash by the E-brake) and hit the button. Start the truck and let it run til it dies...now the fuel system is depressurized.
Pull the electrical connector off the tank, mark and pull the fuel lines, unscrew the metal retainer ring and the pump comes right out. It takes some small wrenches to fit the float, etc. off the old pump to the new pump, but the whole job only takes about 2-3 hours...depending on how quick you work and how many beverages are involved. And as the manual says, installation is in the reverse order. Good luck.
