i am looking to replace the factory speakers in my '02 explorer. any suggestions on what to put in, just good sound, no big thumping needed!! also, do i have to remove the entire door panel to replace the speakers.
any suggestions on in dash cd players?? i will be putting one in soon. i would like to spend less than $200, preferrably $150.
You will need 6x8 speakers for the doors (front and rear) on the '02. It looks like Crutchfield.com has sets for about $60/pair. It appears that you will have to remove the door panels to put the new speakers in. Not a huge deal, just more hassle.
Crutchfield.com has a huge selection of receivers. I usually like to go with something with similar backlighting so that it doesn't look out of place (especially since the stereo is so prominent in the '02 dash). Also, you save $25 if you buy speakers and a receiver at the same time.
You might be able to find this stuff cheaper locally, but Crutchfield does a good job with sending vehicle specific adapters and wiring diagrams.
The door panels come off by removing the plastic piece where the button are and removing a screw behind it. Then there are two screws on the bottom of the panel and you pull the panel up and out. There are no retaining clips holding the panel on. The panel is held in place by L shaped clips. 5x7 or 6x8 will work. I have 5x7's in my front doors. Crutchfield is good but there are other places online that are cheaper then them like Ikesound.com or sounddomain.com just to name a few. Infinity makes a nice speaker thats sounds decent with out an amp. For the radio, at the price you want to be at i would suggest Pioneer. Even if you buy the radio from some one that doesn't supply the wiring harness walmart has them for $7.oo and the dash install kit for $10.oo I have Walmarts install kit and I like it better then the one Crutchfield gives you.
There is an Audio section to this forum you should stop by and check it out. You'll get alot of ideas.
JVC KD-SX990 CD/MP3 Receiver
JVC CH-X1500 MP3 12-disc CD Chan
The MP3 player is awesome and plays tons of tunes.
The speakers were easy to mount but be careful when installing them, mine get caught on the power windows and sometimes come undone.
The 12 CD changer is great too, it also plays MP3's.
