Help decoding my error codes?
P0316 Misfire in 1st 1000 revs
P0174 fuel system too lean (bank 2)
P0300 random misfire detected
P0303 Cylinder number 3 misfire
P0304 Cylinder number 4 misfire
P0305 Cylinder number 5 misfire
P0171 Fuel system too lean (bank 1)
I have replaced all the spark plugs due to running my gas tank to low and it caused alot of chugging and misfire, so those got changed and fuel system/injector cleaner was added and it seemed to solve the problems and truck ran fine. Now it has trouble starting and idling. Once im up to speed and out of 1st gear it runs fine. Any help would be appreciated, i was thinking about replacing the fuel injectors as thats what autozone recommended and the codes seem to match with that assessment, but any other advice would be helpful.
Thanks.
Autozoners knows how to sell parts, they are NOT diagnosticians. If they knew how to diagnose properly, they wouldn't be working as parts drones.
I doubt if it is the injectors unless they are Badly clogged. Also, have they reset the computer? you can do that by disconnecting the battery for more than 30 minutes. it will then reprogram it's sensors, then see what codes come back.
Good idea to have scanned for & posted trouble code Numbers.
I like the trouble shooting ideas put forth so far, but lets think about this some more because there's a Lot of Unknowns.
I see your profile says this ride has between 200-250K miles on it, so a lot of Scheduled Maintenance replacement things have lived Two + life times, thus might be helpful to know the engine/tranny combo you have & if its up to date on All past & present due scheduled maintenance replacement items? Have you been having problems before this event?
Things, like fuel & air filters, PCV valve (if its spring & seat are worn out, mucked up with deposits & stuck open) or its connecting hose or fitting are dry rotted/split/loose fitting, it can cause a gross unmetered vacuum leak, as its down stream of & thus not monitored by the MAF sensor, so will corrupt fuel trim..
A Clogged up fuel filter can cause a weak injector squirt at throttle up..
Spark plug & wire Type you used, were they the specified fine wire center electrode with the platinum pad sidewire type because our waste spark ignition puts a Double work load on them, so they need to be designed to stand up to that & make a good hot spark.
If you find the MAF sensor is dirty, it shouldn't be, as its down stream of the air filter, so look back upstream at the air box, air filter & air tube for ill fit, or damage, or not properly buttoned up.
Lastly, seeing as how you seem to like turning your own wrenches & want to learn about diagnostics that can help shorten a trouble shoot & maybe have it cost less/be more cost effective, maybe consider opting for the ELM scan tool & running a diagnostic software on the viewing device of your choice as discussed here. It sure helped me diagnose my ABS woes a few years ago. Also found trouble codes in the GEM that I didn't know I had, that helped me trouble shoot my intermittent power window problem that had just begun. The ELM & freeware FORScan that's tweaked for Fords is a Very powerful combo & a danged good item for our electronic tool box. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-scantool.html
More beginning thoughts for consideration, let us know what you do & find.
The dead cylinder isn't using up oxygen, so you get extra oxygen in the exhaust and the O2 sensors read that as lean. The unburnt fuel doesn't seem to affect O2 sensors.
Also, I had an aftermarket MAF from Jet Performance that would make the fuel trims run high and throw a lean code if they went past the 25% barrier. Heads, head haskets and OEM MAF and the truck runs with the LTFT's right at 0% now and it has 183,000 miles on it.
