So got the driver's side in yesterday pretty easy. Now doing passenger side and header is hitting between starter and frame not sure why as it says on Flowtech header site that it's a direct fit?
I'm not sure it'll go in from the bottom....
Does anyone have any advice or experience installing headers?
Changing starters wont help as its hitting between the block where the starter bolts on.
Cut the frame a bit with angle grinder??
Thanks for any advice!
When I had headers on my 460 I had to cut a circular notch for frame clearance. To install the header I had to remove the frame mount to get the header mounted. Depending on the condition of the rubber in the motor mounts comes into play also. The clearance through #2 crossmember also took some cutting of the collecter and rewelding to turn it slightly. To help with the connection to the exhaust pipe I used a ball socket type of connection. The best starter would be one of the PMGD styles for additional clearance and less headaches.
Direct fit just means it's supposed to fit. Doesn't mean anything about how long it takes, or how hard it is to install unfortunately!
In the old days (when these trucks were the "new" trucks) it was not uncommon to have to unbolt the engine and lift it up with a hoist or jack underneath the pan (if possible) to get one or both headers to fit.
Not every vehicle required this, but many header designs were not quite as sophisticated or as finely tuned for each chassis as they are nowadays.
And still we have to lift the engines occasionally.
Hopefully it's not the case here, but it might be.
Good luck.
Hi Paul and thanks!
1972 f100 with 302 and c4
It seems even if i jack it up the diameter of the 4n1 is about 5in so no way its gonna fit between frame and big starter plus metal tranny lines.
Ive heard engine can be moved sideways a bit but unsure on how? Loosen just motor mounts or include tranny mounts to be loosened ?
Even with 1/4" move to side header would still be very close to starter...plus i think i have to move tranny lines no matter what.
if i have to cut a slot in frame and/or dent floorboard ill do it but dont want to.
In morning im getting new motor mounts and during that swap ill see if i can work it out.
Note: can i add washers to pass side motor mount to offset motor 1/4" or so?
Well to even jack up engine i need to move the truck back off the curb about 6ft so im ginna start it up and do reverse with NO manifold installed. Shouldnt hurt anything as im only running for about 8seconds 😈
Video of startup to follow lol
Lol im still trying to get the oil filter off to get to the motor mount and it wont budge!
pb blaster aint workin, ive crumpled it a bit trying to turn it...some idiot mustve installed it with no oil or tightened too much...sigh I did the screwdriver thing once barely worked...have sprayed it with pb a few times will let it soak...worst case ill reattach passenger manifold, warm it up then try oil filter.
I just put the headers in my 70 yesterday. Mine's a 360 FE, but the concept is the same. I had to pull the starter on the passenger side, install the header at about a 45 degree angle, slip the starter in, the properly position the header. Yours will likely need a similar process. Things get a lot tighter when 4 pipes are involved instead of one.
If the oil filter is not collapsed try using 2 strap wrenches and with a steady pull I have always been able to get some really over tightened filters off.
I finally got the filter off then jacked up the engine but its only lifting passenger side drivers side of engine not coming up?
i have 3" between frame and flange where starter mounts...need like 4-4.5 at least lol
Today ill try using a wood block and hammering it down hopefully once the collector gets past the starter itll drop in.
Gotta install a starter heat shield and some insulated shielding for wire too.
Then gotta move tranny lines...should i cut lines and add rubber hoses or try to bend lines a little?
Thanks
Are these headers equal length? You are having way too much trouble for a 302. I also would like to know if they are for a Mustang because car headers are almost impossible to put on a bumpside. The mid length headers I installed on the 460 were not that hard and I had no starter clearance issues also with the stock starter.
Hey Kenny
I ordered these from Summit, they're Flowtech headers for 67-72 f100 with 302, long tubes.
I've got it in there and got the bolts started...hopefully itll work as it seems my engine is kicked toward the passenger side a bit idk. Mid work my buddy wanted to go fishing lol so I'll finish in morning.
Thanks for any help
Ok I finally got the passenger header after cutting the trans lines and using temp hoses for now. As you can see in video passenger side is way off compared to drivers side and I'm wondering if the frame may be bent or something?!
