I have a '55 F100 with a newer steering column (tilt/power steering) and can't find the key - the truck has been in a barn for over 10 years and it's now time to finish the restoration. I am assuming that the key is lost and need to get it out of the Barn which requires me to put the truck in neutral and to be able to steer it out. Any good insight on how to unlock the steering column without trashing it? Can I disassemble the column and remove the lock/locking mechanism? Is this easy? What are my alternatives?
On most GM columns it's simple to pop the old lock cylinder out and pop in a new one w/key.
Lock smiths are expensive. I use them only as a last resort.
Besides it would be a lot cheaper to take the column to the locksmith if you can't remove the cylinder th as n having him come to you and do it in the truck. But as Scott said they come pretty easy.
