I have a transmission problem!!! Please help
I have a 89 ford ranger with a automatic transmission. The thing was working fine but now the overdrive will not kick in. Anyone know what might be the problem..

'89 ford Ranger would have an A4LD I believe. The 3-4 shift is computer controlled, and sometimes the problem lies in the computer/electronics. The OD in the A4LD is also known to fail for reasons internal to the transmission. I would start diagnosing this by finding out if the problem lies inside the transmission or in the electronics that control the 3-4 shift. First step would be to obtain a wiring diagram (the ones in the vehicle repair guides at www.autozone.com are adequate for this) and see if the wiring is intact.

I ran down the wires to the transmission and all are in great shape. My next question is on the transmission there is three sets of wires going to it one by the speedometer cabel, e goes to a small plug above the fluid pan and the other to a censor thats about a 1/2" round and 3" long. What if anything does the above items have to do with the shifting? How can you find out if the shift problem is inside or with the computer?

Also I noticed today that when the transmission is cool its running up to about 3200 rpm befor shifting but the overdrive still will not kick in.. Also would the transmission filter cause the problems I started having with this thing?
