Water pump options

I'm replacing my water pump next weekend before we take our fall camping trip. Over the winter i had a leak and it looked like it was coming from around the pump, but not positive. Not sure when it was changed last so figure it could hurt. Additionally I believe there is an ongoing leak because I have to add a little coolant every year but I've never found or smelled coolant.

Anyway, I was going to buy one from Napa or the navistar that Riffraff has. Both are new pumps. Any opinions?

My gasket leaked before the pump did...pump I installed is Alliant. Probably as good as Autozone or O'Reilly.

Make sure you get a Motorctaft gasket if you end up buying a new water pump, the gaskets provided in the autoparts stores pumps are cheap and with a few heat cycles they harden and start leaking.

Oh yah, buy that thermostat flange reinforcing collar while pump is out.

...no better time to slap in a coolant filter and flush the system for Fleet Charge or the like.

boom and boom!!! That ring fix for the thermostat should be standard and Alliant is the way to go. And it is WAY better than any auto parts store pump. Strictly Diesel has the pump, or Rockauto. Dieselsite has the ring fix.

Thanks. I didn't plan on that, but will now. Who likes doing a job to have to do it over again!

Already have the new coolant and got the fleet pre-charged. Bought it for 10.xx a gallon at rural King which was 5 bucks cheaper than Walmart. It's odd that they don't mark it full strength or 50/50. I'm assuming it's full strength.

What is the thermostat reinforcing collar? Why is it needed?

You won't need that gasket if you get an Alliant pump. It comes with a good gasket. I have done three and never had one leak. Just be sure to torque your bolts correctly and you should be fine. Look on Dieselsite at the collar. Our thermostat housings are notorious for leaking. This fixes that.....permanently.

Sounds like you mean that in the Biblical sense. Need to be careful with that, accidents cause offspring.

the bolts on my TSAT housing broke off on removal

I used flange bolts to spread out the pressure so the housing hopefully wont distort when tightened

if it leaks, ill get the ring fix

Ah dangit, I had to fix this on another thread about the same thing. It's Strictly Diesel, not Dieselsite. Sorry about that. I'll find the link like I did for the other guy. When you see it, you'll get it completely.

What do you guys think about this upgrade kit to a pump with built-in filter? It's pricey ($360+shipping), but I'm not spending on power mods so I can justify the cost. That bottom hose is my main concern. I don't know if I want to trust it. Don't know what it is or where it came from.

Ah, hell. This isn't the thread I thought it was. This should go in the cooling system upgrade thread.

Here's another link for the reinforcement ring. I don't know anything about the source, never done business with them.
