Black or silver gauge cluster

I've wondered myself about the use of the black versus silver. I thought that the upscale models like the Ranger XLT & Lariat got the silver, but have seen the silver in supposedly original base models as well. Its usage may have varied year to year?
I upgraded my F150 Custom to a Ranger Lariat interior a few years back & swapped over to a silver overlay. After living with it for a while, I have to say I prefer the black. It is less distracting & the gauges are easier to see in it.
