I would call the MX4 water resistant, not waterproof. Seems to me that unless the tonneau wraps completely over the bed, like some hard caps, they will leak some water, That said, the MX4 is pretty tight and water has not been an issue, but I get a lot of dust.
One thing I like about the MX4 is the ability to completely fold it up so you gain the use of the whole bed. It works pretty slick.
Security is iffy at best. Theoretically, you lock the tailgate and the load is secure. The problem is that it wouldn't take much to pop the top with a prybar or large screwdriver. The latches are a pretty strong plastic, but not invincible.
Another plus on the MX4 is that the tonneau sits between the bed rails. That allows you to add tiedowns like the Bullrings (pretty handy IMHO)
I could never figure out pricing. I bought directly from Bakflip. My experience has been that you can negotiate price, and I got three different prices each time I called. That said, I got a pretty decent discount.
I think the mat finish looks good.
Do you remember what price you ended up paying for it? Im getting prices all over the place so far. The best i have been quoted is 839, but i still feel like I can do better than that. Thanks.
FWIW I had an MX4 and replaced it with a DiamondBack:
1. DiamondBack makes it much easier to access the cab side of the bed. Very convenient and now I use cab and gate sides all the time.
2. I could open the MX4 easily with a coat hanger via the gap between the cover and the tailgate in around 5 seconds. It is not secure at all, it gives the appearance of security. DB very secure.
3. MX4 was pretty water resistant, even through a car wash. DB is totally water resistant - but when you open it after a wash there will be water trapped a bit between the cover and the rails.
4. The only thing I miss about the MX4 is the ability to open and close the gate with the cover down.
5. I got the side baskets and put them cab side. I store straps and winch gear etc here is very convenient. Lots of great larger attached under cover storage options.
6. And of course 1600 lbs on top for any tall items and tons of tie downs
I went with the line-x (truck gear) hard fold. It’s a bakflip g2 with a lifetime warranty for the same price. So far I’ve had no issues with water. It’s been raining non stop for a week where I live and no water has made it into the bed. The lifetime warranty cover leaking so if it ever does they replace it and install for free.
