Note: The Vehicle Wi-Fi Hotspot (Vehicle Hotspot) may be operational while ignition is On and may remain operational while the ignition is Off.
Can anyone who uses the WIFI Hotspot explain this? I haven't signed up for the plan yet, I am considering using it while camping in areas that are not served well by my carrier (T-Mobile). AT&T has a more robust network in the backwoods areas.
What I'm wondering is if it's possible to use the WIFI Hotspot while not in the truck, with the ignition off. (Wife "concerned" about life with out the interwebs)
Reading the owner's manual concerning Wi-Fi hotspot services, Ford appears to dump all responsibility off on the cellular carrier and then says that they share VIN numbers, etc. with the carrier and if you have any questions or problems contact the carrier. It would also appear that in different areas you may have a choice of various carriers. So, how much a month is service? How much data will you get? Since you're essentially buying a data only plan I'm guessing you can't make phone calls over the hotspot unless your phone and selected carrier both allow it (doubtful).
I don't know what your needs are but I have an unlocked smartphone on the AT&T network. I can pair the phone with my truck for phone and text service and the phone itself can act as a Wi-Fi hotspot supporting up to 6 users and it only counts against my normal data plan (6 Gigs, in my case). You should compare prices and features between turning your truck into a sometimes hotspot and an inexpensive (even refurbished) unlocked smartphone on the AT&T network. At least you can put the phone in your pocket and take your hotspot with you. Hard to do with a truck.
