E4OD

So my question is a matter of opinion I reckon but, anyway here it is. I have a 97 F-250 with 450,000 miles original motor and transmission (as far as I know). I use this truck as it's meant to be used daily but I do my best to maintain it and preserve it. So when I am towing load of 15,000lbs or more I generally use back roads and run 50mph in 3rd gear turning 2,000rpms. If I take the interstate I run 70mph in OD turning 2,000rpms. So my question is am I helping my transmission by using 3rd at 2,000 rpms vs 4th at 2,000 rpms?

Thanks for your input

Makes no difference. At 50mph your wise to leave it in 3rd so you don't lug it.

Doesn't make any difference to the trans. It's not going to live longer or shorter either way.Hard to know which would yield better fuel economy in this scenario too.I guess since it's the same rpm,the lower wind speed would be better. At nearly a half million miles,it's unlikely to be original but if it is,it's payed it's dues and you should be preparing financially for a reman.

If it’s lugging turn OD off, if it isn’t lugging then let rip.

It's computer controlled so in theory,it should be impossible to lug it.It should downshift long before that happens.Combine it with a diesel engine where it's much harder to lug than a gas, then it's likely something is very wrong if your E4OD can cause a lugging condition.

I disagree! In my signature I pull 18K and I can lug it all I want but I don't want to. It will blow black smoke all over the country side if I lug it. I'm not going to floor it just to get it to downshift so I'll play with the shifter when I have to 'get it going'.

I agree. Pull a big load, you can easily lug it. Been there, done that. Keep doing what you are doing op. OD at 50 with 15k won't work.

Good to see ya Mike. 👍

Interesting. The trans controller in IDI trucks have much different shift scheduling I guess.Mine downshift quickly, the heavier the load.
