opening hood

Why is my 1960 F100 hood so heavy to open. Everything is free and lubricated. I know the springs are getting weak. What notch should they be in? It takes 3 men and a boy to lift that hood.

It would be interesting to know exactly how much these hoods weigh. I'm pretty sure if I go with a fiberglass hood I can easily put my spare 900 lb 6.0L diesel in it.
