towing with a V10

if you had a choice between a 2005 e350 HD base van with 14K miles and 3.73 gear ratio and 2010 e350 HD van with 4.10 gear ratio with 130K both V10, which would you choose if you wanted to tow a 29ft 7K trailer mostly in the mountains (4500lb dry) occasionally. The rest of the time van would be used as people hauler (potentially a kayak business and a relatively light trailer)

Towing capacity is 8K with 3.73 and 10K with 4.10

the 2010 has other goodies like break controller, navi system and backup camera, but these are relatively minor considerations.

Other than year and cost (2010 is actually cheaper), what other considerations would you have? Other than body, are the vans mechanically practically the same?

For example, I've read that the transmission starting with 2005 should have been torque shift. The code under transmission says "T" on the sticker.. I tried to google that and found reference to four speed (on ranger)

Get the 2010 with 4.10s. The gears will make driving a little nicer and make it harder to overheat the trans if you leave OD on. Having a van that's 5yr newer will be nice.

3.73 vs. 4.10 isn't a big enough difference to make the decision off of. The overall condition of the van is more important. A rear gear chance will be around $1k, and that's if you get new gears and a shop does it. You could probably find a used axle with 4.30s already in it for $600-ish. Don't buy a turd just to get 4.10s, get the better overall van.

We're only talking a 200rpm difference at 65mph in 4th or 5th gear, the 5R110W tow/haul mode will hold your shifts out so this minor of a gear difference will only really be felt starting and on the highway in OD, and even then will be minimal. 4.30s was the better factory gear option anyways, if you get the 3.73 van because it's better overall you have to swap anyway, why not go to a better ratio than the other van offers?

The mileage difference is not inconsiderable. 115k fewer miles on the drivetrain is a lot.

A 7k lb trailer with 3.73’s shouldn’t be an issue. I would go with the newer van. If it comes down to it, Regearing to 4.30 isn’t to expensive.

Keep an eye on your tire size, as it makes a big difference

historically, the E series uses smaller tires than the F series. 4.30 gears with a 245/75r16 is a lot different than the same gear with a 265/75r16.

4.30s with the bigger tire size puts the v10 right in the sweet spot, but with smaller tires it might be too much.

give me the tire size and I'll show you what rpm to expect at any given speed with any given gear with either transmission.
