How much fluid?
How much and what kind of fluid goes into a np235 out of an 85 f150, and the transfer case as well? Thanks!

NP435 4x4 trans holds 6.5 pints of 80-90w gear oil
Transfer Case holds 6, 6.5 or 7 pints depending on what type of transfer case. And they all take Dexron auto tranny fluid.

It's more than likely a NP208. Could also be a Borg/Warner 1345. Since all Ford transfer cases of any year bolt up to any Ford 4x4 transmission, someone could have swapped something else in there also.

Does it have to be a special oil, like synthetic or synchromesh?

No. You would want a hypoid additive for a limited-slip rear end, but nothing is ever different for the transmission.

If you want to spring for the synthetic gear oil, they say it will shift better in the winter. It's pricey though. They make a dexron VI that is a semi-synthetic you could put in the transfer case also. Cheapest place it get it is Walmart.
