mileage

Has anyone disconnected the front driveshaft on a 4X and seen any improvement in mileage? I remember when I was younger people doing that to remove drag due to FWD setup. Just curious if it does do anything. have an FX4 but never use 4x and we are planning another trip for early October.

TIA

Meaningless, won't do a thing. With correctly functioning front hubs there's no parasitic loss from the driveshaft anyway because the front axle is disconnected from the wheels.

You driving 60-65 versus the 75-85 common on western interstates will make a much more significant impact.

^^^^^ What Bryan said -- your driveshaft in the front is engaged by your transfer case for 4x4 use. Leave it in 2WD and drive a little slower. And if you really never need 4WD, consider changing to just a 2WD? They generally get the best mileage...

Thanks guys but you dont understand. The wife hates going as slow as 60-65 when we travel and in the past the mileage was not that significantly different for 70-80. As why a FX4, got a deal on it new that made it less than a 2x (they lost it in the inventory and were going to have to pay interest from day 1) so the sales girl called and told me to come get it. It has been a good truck but its only for travel now as sold the TT and got a RV.

The best mod I ever did for fuel economy in my truck was to buy a Focus.

I've more than paid for this car with 110k miles of 35-40mpg versus 15-16mpg in the truck, especially with the equity rollover on buying it after putting 80k on another car before that, and 20k on a motorcycle before that back in the glory days of 2008 when diesel was $5/gal.

Unlike some other vehicles, with our system the front drive system disconnects at both the wheels and the transfer case. None of driveshaft or front axle turns in 2WD to suck up fuel as a parasitic loss. An older Ford Ranger that had hubs constantly engaged always had a parasitic loss.

In the past (speed) not significantly different in mileage with what vehicle?

Superdutys are bricks pushing through the air. The 2WD can get a little better mileage because they are lower to the ground.

the truck gets about 6-7 less than wifes accord on highway and about 20 less than our hyundai tow car all driven at same speeds. Last trip we got about 17 with it so not terribly bad but could be better. Its comfort that it provides and not as tiresome to drive on extended trips. yes there are pros-cons to everything but ya try to make the best out of what ya got.

Must be the V6 with the parking brake on...

Crap my bi-turbo 4.7 Benz will pull mid 20s on the highway and I drive it "briskly" you might say...

I wouldn't mind seeing 17+ in the truck (I think it does get around that at 70 on the fwy) -- I gave up checking mileage and just enjoy it...

That's strange, going slower gives the wife more time to talk 😁😁
