I just got my truck back(02' psd) with 4.56's and dual arb's. I put the truck in 4wd for just a few miles on flat straight concrete without the lockers engaged at all. The noise, clanking, vibrating and such was awful. I have loud tires and at thirty I could hear the front diff howling over the tires. I talked to the installer and he says this is a normal part of the break-in but I just don't buy it. It used to be that when I put it in 4 that you could barely tell. Anyone have any thoughts?
ask him when he thinks it will go away. then make sure that after that time you can bring it back to him to get t fixed right. i don't think you should have any noise with break in. i know that the gears should make no noise at all, not sure what noise that locker will make. but if the gears are making noise that almost never goes away, there should be no noise if set up right.
What kind of gears did you have installed, supposedly the cheap gears will make some noise, not a loud howl, gears should not make that kinda noise when breaking in.
Are you actually putting the truck in 4x4 or just locking the hubs? If you are putting it in 4x4 try to just lock the hubs in and see if there's as much noise then.
Yeah, I have tried all of the above. Gears are from Randy's and even called them to confirm that as well as the spline count and size of all the other stuff he ordered. Finally he says that he may not have changed the pinion bearing but Randy's says that that should only make noise on deceleration. I am going back tomorrow to let him fix it. I am leaving for a month to Sac-to on Monday so he better fix it or there is going to be an ***-whoopin. I tried the hubs and no noise so it's not the wheel bearings or the hubs. Not supposed to be this damn hard. On the up side it will hopefully be done for a trip to hollister hills while I am in Sacramento.
If the lash is set incorrectly gears will make noise like that (which is what I'm suspecting, allot of guys screw up on that). Either way he needs to get in there again...
Well first he set the backlash at 4000 whatever that means. Then he changed it to 8000 with the same results. I don't know but this guy came highly recommended. Glad to hear your opinion Pro.Thanks. I will let you know what happens.
