e250 rear axle identification

I'm having trouble identifying the type of rear differential//axle i have. there is no tag, and the stamp is no longer visible.

the code in the door for my 2001 ford e250 van is B4. Based on what i've been able to dig up, it's i'm thinking it's either a Dana 8.8 in, or 9.75 in. And need to know which- so i can find out how the type of differential fluid to use, and if (and how much) friction modifier to use. Any help you could provide would be great.

How many bolts on the rear diff and what shape is it? A 'D' shape is 9.75. The 8.8 is more oval. In the Exp I think 4.6 had 8.8 and 5.4 were 9.75. Being E250 I thought they were dana 60's non-floater.

It has 10 bolts on the plate.
Funny though, a ford service tech told me i have the 9.75 inch. I don't. Looking at pictures of the 9.75 online, i can clearly see it's not it. The plate appear the same as a Dana 60- and I was told by another individual in the business that it is a :
FORD Model 60/248 REAR 2001 - E-250 VAN SRW - SEMI FLOAT W/ABS

Is the Ford model 60 the same as the Dana 60? - at least as far as the plate is concerned? I've got the amounts and type of differential fluid down, i just need to know, so i don't order a gasket i can't use.

Yes a Ford model 60 is a Dana 60, and the rear cover doesn't use a gasket normally... just rtv sealant.

Thanks!

yeah, i was aware of the RTV sealant, but i'd rather use a gasket. do u know of any possible benefit of using the RTV over a gasket? Wouldn't it be more of a pain- including on the cleanup of the plate when changing your differential fluid the next time?

A Dana 60 is a 9.75” axle, but there is also a Ford built 9.75” axle.

B4 is either a Dana 60 or Dana 61 3.73-1 w/Limited Slip and a 5,300 lbs. axle capacity.

My 99 e250 has a 24 axle code. I know it's an open 3.73 Dana 60. That follows ford code with a 2 digit axle code being open and a letter digit code for limited slip.

Yes the ring gear diameter is 9.75" and that just happens to be how Ford corporate axles are identified, but the Dana axle predates the Ford 9.75 used in late model(2000+ or so) F150s by several decades so no parts interchange.

The diff cover is a stamped steel piece which is not likely to have a perfectly flat mating surface so it's very likely some sealant will be needed to seal it even with a gasket so using one isn't buying you anything.

1959 thru today: Two digit AXLE code. If the first digit is a letter: Limited Slip. If the first digit is a number, no Limited Slip.

Three digit AXLE code: The 3rd digit (either a letter or number) refers to the front axle.

Yep, I assumed everyone would assume digit was a number... didn't post the 3 digit info cause it's a 2wd van. On the front axle spot, does it matter if it's number or letter? Both would signify LS correct? Mostly I have seen have been H92
