Old speedometer cable on the right. You can see how much is still in the gauge.
Back of speedometer. Hard to see down the shaft.
I've recently started working on my '64 F100 Speedometer. After a bunch of head scratching, labeling, testing, I believe the old cable broke off in the speedometer.
Good news the speedometer works, only the new cable won't go all the way in because of the broken off piece.
I dripped some atf/alcohol in the part where the broken piece goes, and letting it sit for a spell. Praying that it will 'relax'.
I figured i could drill with a small pin vise/drill set up...or small tap?
Since the cable is spiral, you may be able to unwrap it with a small instrument, like a dental pick. It looks like you will need to work it clockwise. If it is in there, it should not be tight. Or try to blow it out with compressed air. Measure the depth of the hole with a toothpick or something. It might be easier just to tap the ferrule on the new cable to match the depth and move on.
