Acceleration Tick - 1993 e-150 5.0l

Backstory:
I bought the van with a bad (noisy) manifold. Having replaced that, I moved on to the cooling system due to a bad regulator on the instrument cluster .... maybe (thread here - https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...50&postcount=1). In doing that I replaced some noisy idler pulleys. I'm now down to one of the last issues with this vehicle... an undiagnosed tick :-/

Before I hadn't noticed it due to the previous items noted above making too much noise. It may not have been there before, or maybe it was and I didn't notice it.

Items replaced:
...Radiator
...A couple radiator hoses
...Thermostat
...Water Pump
...Fan Clutch
...AC didn't work when purchased, so I had the R12 can replaced and that got the systen working.
...AC Clutch
...multiple oil changes at this point
...air filter
...cap and rotor
...spark plugs leads (wires?) These were some "performance" model. I have the box if a brand and model would help
...spark plugs (autolite) I gapped per the vehicle engine frame spec sticker

I have NOT replaced the fuel filter yet, nor have I checked the fuel pressure.

Symptoms:
So the sound occurs under hard acceleration or when trying to quickly accelerate uphill. If I back off on the gas when I hear it it will quiet down. What it sounds like is a popping sound similar to a backfire. It's not a rythmic rattle like I imagine lifters would be. It's an inconsistent pop that sounds like a mini backfire. I am suspicious it could be a check valve in the smog system, but I was unable to find a replacement so held off (here's the thread that identified what it was - https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post18116712). The electrical bundle around this check valve looks like it was warm at one point.

I'm not sure if it is a backfire, or tick, knock, exhaust, etc., But I would like it to go away before I try towing my 17' bellboy to the river for fall kings.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated!

Check valve:

Sorry, this check valve is at the back of the motor near the van's doghouse and this is the 302

I ran across this thread. I wonder if I need to replace the intake manifold gasket.... That would be a bummer of a job.

That is your crossover pipe. You can buy a complete one. Attaches to each head. Or you can plug the holes with pipe plugs (I think 3/8" but its been awhile since I did my old f-150). Its not an expensive piece and pretty easy to replace on a van. With the doghouse off can you rev the engine and hear any leak at that point? It looks like someone tried to wrench that for some unknown reason.

I ran across a couple threads that convinced me not to remove the emisions system. What led to you removing yours if you don't mind my asking?

I know the check valves are to prevent a backfire, but have you or anyone else had a backfire situation in a bad smog system?

Thanks for the reply!

Mine had broken and I had the engine pulled for the exhaust leak (didn't really need it). I had bought the part but never installed it and had plugged the holes and reinstalled the engine while waiting on the part. It was in a F-150 and its a pain to get to that pipe.

Oye, I can't imagine reaching around the engine block to get that off!

I'll try your tip and hit the gas pedal with the dog house removed.
