my 1972 f100 was running like a champ, but now, I can’t keep it running unless my foot is on the gas pedal. I change my fuel filter and air filters, but to no avail. Any ideas? Does my truck have an IAC? The carb must be getting gas as it turns right over.
Not really. Though when it comes right down to it, the carburetor IS the IAC!
When was the last time you did a tune-up or rebuilt the carburetor? Are you running electronic ignition, or points still? If points, maybe you have an ignition issue that's lowered the efficiency just enough.
Does it die instantly when you let off the gas? Or will it idle for a moment or two first?
If it idles at all, what is the speed? If you don't have a tachometer, does it sound low? If so you may just have a carb linkage issue, or an ignition issue.
Or, another common malady, a vacuum leak.
Easy to check for though, and well worth it any time your engine acts up.
Starting in 70 ford started using this auto choke pull down diaphragm that opens the choke butterfly at the top of the air horn that's shown
in this picture.
This over chokes the engine at idle an must keep working the gas pedal to keep it going..
But does sound more like a vacuum issues, Also check the dizzy vacuum advance diaphragm canister not working an sucking air..
