So the deal with 7.3L F450 went off since CA requires engine repower for older truck (2009 and older on 14001 lbs GVWR or more).
I'm back looking for a regular cab chassis with 169" WB, or with a 12' flatbed/contractor bed, 6.7L diesel.
I've been looking all over my local (2 hours radius) area but can't find anything decent that doesn't break my bank. I'm trying to get around 50-80k miles max in 6.7L set up. I think I'm more into F350 but would go with F450 if the deal is super great.
I really want to buy from big company or government agency's surplus but not sure how to go about it.
Here in Ohio they take retired county repair vehicles and sell them at the auto auctions. That’s how I landed my F350 dually. It was an ex-water works vehicle.
Thanks Dave. I figured auctions ought to be one of the main ways. I’ll look around for one to see.
The big positive about buying an ex-government vehicle (town, county, etc.) is that they are usually very well maintained. Bought mine with 132,000 and it had full service history for its entire 13 year existence.
CA requires any diesel truck with GVWR 14001 or heavier to retire or repower with a 2010 MY engine by a certain date.
My case was for a 2003 F450, rated at 15k lbs. So by Jan 2020 it needs to be repowered. I skipped and bought a 2004 Chevy 3500 duramax with 81k miles instead. But I’m still on the look out for newer chassis, preferably less than 50k miles.
