I am slowly restoring an 84 f150 flareside. It currently has the 300 l6 engine. What is your guys opinion about the 300? Worth rebuilding or should i upgrade?
I prefer the 300 from a utility and usefulness standpoint as I tow a boat and stuff.
if you are gonna be involved in a cruising scene going to gatherings and get togethers meeting up at shows and having your hood up with lots of go fast bling then you might want a V8. Also if you want to go to sonic and dairy Queen with a lopey cam and dual exhaust.
Great engine... Did anything I ever asked of it without complaint. Easy to service. It would chirp the tires on my 86. I'm pretty sure my 302 is slower than that six.

lol Yea my 302 in my '82 wouldn't spin the tire. Given I got 31x10.50-15 AT tires on her along with the stock 2.90:1 axle ratio. But my 302 feels gutless big reason why I am upgrading.
Stock 84 v8? No. Mod the six. Efi exhaust manifolds. Offy 4bbl manifold. Self learning aftermarket efi. Maybe a cam. Maybe higher compression maybe head porting. Or search out using 250 Chevy rockers. What transmission do you have?
If you've driven it you'd know. Is first a real creeper gear, and you can easily take off in 2nd? Or is it like a 3 speed, with a big gap 2nd to 3rd, and low revs in 4th?

Every show / gathering you go to EVERYONE has a v8 that you hear from a block away.
I like to be different and would go with the 300 six. Maybe do a little hop up and call it done.
Wait I did that!
I really did not hop it up, I only went with EFI exh. manifolds into the stock pipes & muffler. I am rebuilding the truck, cab & bed off frame, and trying to keep the $$ as low as I can.
I will use the truck for trash runs & gatherings on weekends and drive to work a few times and as a backup to pull my car trailer when needed.
The trany in my truck is a T18 that has a granny first gear. Good for getting heavy loads moving from a stop not a fast shifting trany.

Or look on the shifter for 1-2-3-4 or 1-2-3-OD.
4spd non overdrive. Havent even driven it. Working on it just to get it started
