i need help, My fiance and I have a ford explorer sport 1998 and in the mornings it doesn't want to start! We have had everything possible done to it to make stop. I have heard some people say that it has to do with Mass Air Flow? Or Air Flow control System? If you know anything could you please help? Thanx
What are the symptoms when it won't start?? Does it crank OK and not fire, or vice-versa? If it's cranking, is it getting fuel? You should be able to hear the fuel pump prime for a second or two, when you first turn the key to the 'on' position.
Just curious, but does it have a probelm with cold weather? I bought my 2000 over the summer and since the colder weather has started to hit it doesn't want to start. If I give it some gas it stays running and I am fine until I hit a red light. After about 3 miles or so when the engine has warmed up it runs fine, but I am going to kill somone flying like a bat out of hell out of my driveway.
Firegurl, I had a similar problem with my 2001 explorer a couple of days ago. It wasn't in cold weather though. It would start, but died after I let off the gas or came to a stop. I did a search and found it could be the idle air control (IAC) valve. I cleaned it and the problem stopped.
Sidenote: Took it into the shop for a factory recall and told them to go ahead and replace the valve, but the guys didn't see a problem and instead reprogrammed my PCM(?). Not sure if that was a good thing or not or if it has anything to do with it either. If it happens again, I might have to replace it myself.
