Any recommondations on performance enhancing chips for a 97 Explorer with a 4.0 and auto transmission? I see many...some as low as 5 dollars on ebay and am wondering if any really make much of a difference....Better mileage would be better...lots of hiway miles.
What you're seeing on eBay are 5 cent resisters from Radio Shack. They are a rip off, decrease mileage (cause more fuel to be used), will probably cause you to fail emissions and cause little, if any, gain.
i put a superchip in my 94 explorer...i love it ...just call the company while you install it...theres a few things the instructions dont tell you...like you have to tpae it to the computer box (saftey thing so it dont fall out, it holds rather well though) and you may have to wedge something inbetween the chip and computer box soi the chip is at a perfect 90 degree angle connection on the board...
I have had just about every chip made (except the EBay thing). Superchips makes a good product, but their prices for reburns and reprogramming have gone sky-high.
For the money, I would go with Diablo or Apten (a Diablo derivative). You get better results for your money, plus it is not as expensive to have the chip reprogrammed to go with future mods. I run a Diablo in my X.
If you are not going to do any engine mods besides a chip, exhaust, and an air filter kit, I recommend either looking at the Diablo Delta, or one of the Superchip Tuners.
