Fuel pump problem

I have a 2001 Excursion with 6.8. Today I filled the tank up and drove home no problem. It set for about 15 minutes and I went to start it and dies as soon as I put it in gear. I put it back in park and now it turns over but does not start. I also notice the fuel hand is now on empty and the overhead says 0 miles to empty. This has me thinking wiring instead of pump but not sure. Would a bad PATS system or key chip cause this? Anyone here had a similar problem?

As of right now I have checked relay, fuse, and fuel shutoff. All seem fine. I can't hear the fuel pump when I turn on the key. I will check the fuel pressure in a few minutes. What gets me is the gauge showing empty and I know it is full. It read full all the way until this happened.

I don't have a fuel pressure gauge here at home but when I push in on the valve some fuel will spray out when turning on the key. Just saw a mouse while I was under the hood leading me to believe it has done something in there. The guy I bought it from recently let this vehicle set for about 3 years.

Autozone and the like can rent you a fuel pressure gauge. You would have to search to see what the recommended fuel pressure is... I don't remember what it was when I checked mine a few years ago.

Problem solved. I decided to pull out each fuse one by one. The number 19 fuse under the dash was blown. It's a 10 amp fuse that powers the instrument cluster and the PATS system. Replaced it with another 10 amp fuse and fires right up. So far it has not blown again. If it does I will be searching for a short. Thank you guys for your help. I should have been checking all fuses first thing. Hopefully this thread will help someone else that encounters this.

Why are my problems never solved by replacing a fuse?

Congrats on the persistence, and thanks for reporting back.

I had to report back. I can't stand the threads where no one reports back and we are left guessing.

thank you,

I agree with Housedad, Fuses don’t typically blow out of the blue.....find the reason it blew before it leaves you stranded
