disc brake upgrade

I'm almost ready change my front beams and brakes, but I have one question before I do. When installing the '78 beams with new rotors, calipers, tie rods, brake lines, and proportioning valve, is the distribution valve on the frame still required? I've read the tech articles from 2013 and 2015 but the question about the distribution valve on my '72 frame is still in my mind. I guess looking at the '78 donor when I removed the front suspension would have answered my question, but never thought of it at the time!

Thanks for any help,
Dan

Ok you have a 72 that you we be using the 78 parts on right?
Does the 72 have disc brakes now?
If not then I would get the beams on out to the wheel as a whole assy., get the valve on the frame and the master as the drum/drum & disc/drum masters are different and get all lines from master to valve and out to front wheels along with the rubber hoses.

Now use the disc/drum master as a core and get a new one as you don't know how good it is.
Don't use the rubber hoses you pulled other than to match up to news ones you should get also.
Get a rear rubber hose too as that one is old also. When was the last time the rear brakes were looked at?
As for the metal lines you can use them if they are in good shape or use or use them as a pattern to bend new ones.

So new disc/drum master, new rubber hoses front & rear, brake fluid and if the metal line and rear brakes are good should be all set.
And yes I have done a few brake up grades using stock parts on non-Ford cars and all have turned out great.

Thanks Fuzz Face, but I have all the parts for the conversion, but was inquiring about the differential valve on the frame (drivers side near the trans mount). While I was waiting for replies, I hopped over to the dent side forum and found a picture (worth 1000 words). The '78 F150 has a proportioning valve on the frame where the differential valve on the '72 with drum brakes used to be.

Here's some reading material for you (And yes, you should use the parts from the '78 donor!)

Thanks for the info James. I'm using the Wilwood adjustable proportioning valve on my conversion.

ALL 1967 thru the 1990's F100/350's, Bronco's and Econolines with dual master cylinders have a BRAKE PRESSURE DIFFERENTIAL VALVE that some people call a proportioning valve.

The valve used on 1968/72 F100 2WD's with drum brakes is different than the valve used on 1975/79 F100/150's with discs. 1973/74 F100 2WD's with discs use a different valve.

You won't need the 72 valve anymore. The 78 one will take it's place. The Wilwood one won't be necessary either. As long as you use a 78 replacement Master.

Then there is the brass block, not sure what it is called, a 'splitter' up in the front. Does it have a residual pressure valve in it?

The lines splitting off the block out to the front wheels is a metering (hold-off) valve that would have been factory installed on '68-'72 F250 and F350 trucks with factory front discs. If you're installing the multi-function brake valve from a Dentside, the metering valve will be built into the Dentside integrated valve body assembly (the old stand-alone metering valve would be removed from the system).
