I have searched the posts for info on these codes but havent't found conclusive help. I have a MIL reading codes P0171/P0174 Bank 1 and Bank2 Lean Condition. It is an 82K mile E-150 5.4L. I have owned it only for the last 2500 miles and this is the third time the MIL light has come on. The first two times I took it to the dealer because I was to busy to look into it myself here is what they did:
5/20/03 DPFE Sensor
5/5/03 FTP
In this case the symtoms are heavy to extreme surging (swings 500-1000 rpms) at idle which typically leads to stalling at busy traffic lights. It also has pinging for the first second or so on acceleration while at highway driving. Otherwise it drives fine. I read alot about general cleaning of EGRs, MAF, etc., vacuum leaks, is there any way to narrow down such an overt problem to a single point failure?
I decided to do some troubleshooting with the van engine on and the engine cowling off while sitting inside to see if I could hear anything and after awlile ofwiggling and prodding I found what was a pretty serious vacuum leak on the line that feeds the PCV Valve from the intake manifold. It turns out Ford uses at 90 degree rubber boot to adapt the intake manifold 5/8 or 3/4 in nipple to the PCV 3/8 or 1/4in hard plastic line (I'm not sure of the exact dimensions they're probably metric anyways). It was very thin material and almost gooey consistency. BTW, This was very easy to find with the E-150, but would be harder with the F-150. Just follow the vacuum line from the PCV (RT Side Valve cover to the center of the back of the upper intake manifold. If anyone else has similar problems you may want to inspect for it, I'm sure they all deteriorate, although the E-150 may have a high heat load back there in the doghouse area. I took a picture which I can email too.

That is actually a really common problem. every 4.6 and 5.4 (even the 4v nav) have this problem..... Ford just didn't design a good piece of rubber.......=)
Thats sounds typical. I wonder if there is an updated part? I also couldn't find a TSB about it. I replaced it with the same part number that was called for originally because that was all the parts guy could find out about it. (it did come with a free PCV Valve though for $24)
