I have a 99 sd F250 and my front wheel bearings are going out after only 90000 klms. All my driving is offroad as I live in the bush.
The parts people tell me that the only front wheel bearing unit available for my truck is $650 Canadian [about$350US]. This seems high and I wondered if anyone knew of an alternative, such as a unit that I could maintain: ie grease.
My manufature date of Jan. 99 is what makes me need this expensive unit, acording to the parts people. I hope someone has an idea. Thanks Henry
This is the nature of the beast ,we are all in the same boat!
There is a company called Dyna-Trac makes a kit but it is $1500
Some people have tried to press out the old bearings and press new in but we have not heard back with there results!
Henry, I just installed an aftermarket bearing and hub assy on my early 99 f350 4x4, actually built in 98, it's made by bower/bca which is Federal mogal- part #515020- if you have abs sensors on your front wheels. This part is made to fit the later 99s and 2000 and it has a thicker wheel flange which makes it 0.115" thicker from the mount flange to the wheel flange. This moves the rotor out 0.115" to make up for this I put 1 washer under each of the brake caliper mount points. The truck drives perfect. I got the part from O'Reily auto parts for $266 and it has a lifetime warranty.
Hey dumone59,
Could you tell me how many miles you have on your bearing install and do you run manual hubs?
This Federal mogal lifetime warranty means I can maintain this part or is it just a selling point? Reason I say that is my location in northern Canada means that their warranty would probably be very slow to collect on. Of course I would also have to check if it's valid here. Thanks Henry
Henry, My hubs are manual, I just did the bearing job about 100 miles ago, they cannot be serviced, and I think the warranty comes from the auto parts store that I bought them from, not Federal mogal. I hope this helps you.
