I have a 1988 F-150 4x4 with a 4 inch trail master lift, when I approach a stop and apply my brakes I hear a clunk, like the suspension is shifting, I think its the beams that come back from the axle to below the cab, I noticed there were bushings there, but when layin under the truck, everything looks tight. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
That is pretty common. It usually is the bushing on the end of the arms. Do you hear it when you gas it too? If not, check both sides, mainly the front side bushing. It's easier to see these move if someone can watch them while you move the truck back and forth.
Thanks Stepman, it only does it on braking. I am guessing from looking at the configuration of the front axle that one side has downward pressure, and the other has upward pressure.
It shuoldn't mess up the alignment. All they do is hold your axle at a fixed point. Being bad they will wear your tires since your wheel will move back and forth, changing your alignment.
