Question battery or starter?

Last night my truck ran fine, this morning I go to start it, and all I get is this "KUNK" sound. I hook the ranger to the jumper cables and to my car, let it charge for awhile. Try to start it, "KUNK" again. I pull the starter off, take it apart, everything seems OK. Should I by a replacement starter? When I hit the starter the motor turns like a 1/4". Any help appreciated!

DOes it have a starter relay? If so did you try bypassing it first? Just jumper the two large lugs of the relay. Of course ensure it is in neutral with the park brake on if it is a manual transmission.

If you hold the key in the start position for a short (5 sec.) period of time, do the cables get warm? (Not just in one spot but along the entire length.) If so, the starter is drawing too much and needs to be replaced. If you see any smoke at connections, clean them.

well mac you were right, the wires were getting warm. I took the starter to advanced auto, they put it on the tester and it turned about 4 rpm pick up a new one this week-end.
