The bronco passed emissions on saterday. The hole problem was the cataletic converter, put a new one on and it passed with readings lower than my budies Honda Civic.
It actualy read 0 part per million on Hydrocabons, thats a perfict score.
For thos of you that have no idea what im talking about look here
However, removing the smog air pump WILL affect the longevity of that new cat converter. The air pump feeds the cat converter with air so that it becomes superheated and incinerates all unburnt fuel coming out of the engine...not adding the air pump is "loading" the cat converter and I have seen some vehicles go up in flames due to this.
The truck may read zero HCs for now...but wait 1-2 years from now....
I would also set the timing back to spec and install some hotter spark plugs. Then adv the timing until you get pinging....and then back it off some until it stops....
The new cat converter with the Bassani Y pipe should render my HCs to zero as well....I have 30 something HCs at idle.....and 17 at speed.
I was going to go through emissions but changed my mind considering the fact that i changed to a larger motor, and that the only emissions equipment that are on my truck right now are Highflow cats, EGR, and PCV i dont think i would pass(the visual check anyways) so i am going to register under my friends house that is out of the emissions checking zone, then when i get my tabs, i do not have to test my truck!
The cat I had installed is designed to run without a smog pump. It doesnt even have the air inlet tube, so I dont think it will be a problem. The old one was the same way and it was installed in 1997. I think what killed that one was how bad the Bronco smoked when it was first started after it's 2 year down time.
I did put the timing back to spec of 10 btc.
Thanks for your advice and concern, and let me know what your opinion is about this cat being designed to not use an air pump.
i think the cat will do fine without the smog pump, i also have highflow cats that are ment to run without a air pump that i have also removed the air pump. you should be fine.
The cat you had installed is an inline cat converter.
The cat in my truck doesn't have the air tube running into it as well...the tube taps into the main exh pipe just before the cat converter....
The reason the cat converter won't last as long is the lack of air dilution necessary to heat the conveter to the right temps...
Wetting the cat or soaking it, with unburnt fuel or gases, will load it up and cause the internal element to fail in about 2 years.
tapping an air pipe into the exh pipe and running it to the diverter valve would be beneficial...as well as installing a new smog pump...(as these don't rob much power at all)
Longevity and reliability is what I am trying to reflect on.
Heck, high flow cats do a wonderfull job, but if you don't get them to temps....they won't work right...
I would also have your fuel injection psi regulator checked for proper operation.....this could also cause high HC's and dump too much fuel into your engine....also cutting the life of your converter short.
call me neurotic, but i like my vehicles to run in tip top shape.
I got over 200k miles out of the original 5.8, got over 400k on my 280z and 156k on my honda crx all are in good running order.

Ther is really no reason to it's all new from Ford, and if it was running rich then the HEGO's would be cousing codes to be stored in the K.A.M. and it would show them on the K.O.E.R. test but it does not.
Also my 89 Ranger (Mr. Ranger) came from the factory with no smog pump or thermactic air system, so some cats must be designed to work without it.
Under the description of my cat in the catologe it says for vehicles without air injection.
(hey check it out I used a quote for the first time)
Like a charm..... One note, I've been running close to 12 BTDC for a timing setting with no pinging (but every other problem) on my old EEC, and now I'm getting a bit under load (even with 91 octane). Just need to dial it back a few degrees. It's been a great education, and it's a great feeling to have it work and work right! I guess when you consider what a college class costs anymore, dropping the $$$ in parts for something like this doesn't hurt as bad when you can come out of it understanding your truck better, and also knowing that swapping in EFI to, say, a '60's Mustang or older Bronco or F100 is not that scary.
also fords 96 MAF engines did not come with a smog pump, they just have a pulley downthere to take up the spot on the belt. and those cats run forever, im thinkin that what ever happens, happens. i dont really mind not having cats on my rig (i can get out of emissions testing esily) so if they decide to freeze, ill just gut them so it looks like i have cats.
