I have a 93 Ranger 4x4, and I'm pretty sure my ABS is not working. Any time I hit the brakes fairly hard, the front wheels lock up, and if its wet or snowy, they lock up even under moderate braking. I'm not getting any ABS warning lights or anything though. It's really starting to scare me; I've slid off the road twice since Sunday. I had a pad disintegrate a year or so ago, and it grooved the rotor a little, and I haven't replaced it, and I had a rear brake line fail a week or two ago, and I replaced it, and I've replaced the front pads twice. Could it be something I've done? Or is there a bad sensor in the ABS? I'd like to know if it is something relatively simple I can fix myself before I take it to a dealer to get fixed. I may just end up buying a new truck, I am always nervous driving mine now.
That would explain a lot. The rear wheels never lock. If memory serves, it did it before the rotor was grooved. I intend to put a new rotor on it as soon as I can. The problem could also be with the rear brakes. I've not changed the shoes since I had the truck, so they could be out of adjustment or worn out. Although they were fine at my last inspection. I'll have to check. If the fronts are doing all the work, that could explain the front wheels locking. One of the front wheel bearings is getting a little loose, but it wasn't bad, so I didn't think it would cause any problems. Thanks for the help. I really like my truck, but the brakes grabbing is starting to make me gunshy, especially since its happened twice in two days.
