I need some guidance on diagnosing some issues with my 2004 5.4L F-150. A couple of weeks ago while driving my truck I noticed a slight loss in power as I was climbing a small incline on the highway. Shortly after my check engine light came on. I decided to drive it over to a friends house where I would have access to a scanner so I could see what codes it was throwing. On the drive to his house my truck had a huge loss of power and shortly after it stalled completely. Luckily I wasn't far from his house. The scanner picked up misfired in #2, #3, #4 cylinders and I want to say it threw a code for a cam position sensor I can't really remember. Since then I've towed the truck back to my house and I could really use some advice on where to begin. I changed both cam position sensors. The old that I pulled out weren't in good shape at all. One was missing a chunk off the end and the other hand a lot of sludge-like build-up on it that made it quite difficult to remove. Still no luck there. The truck still idles extremely rough, still sounds like it's missing, from time to time it'll jump up to like 2000 rpms or more and stay there for about 15 seconds then it drops back down to a rough idle until it stalls or I shut it off. That has really thrown me for a loop because it does it on its own. I once noted a puff of black smoke from my tailpipe and anytime you start the truck you get a very noticeable smell of gasoline. I also want to note that when I was driving the truck to my friends house, when it stalled for the first time I noticed afterwards anytime I started the truck the oil pressure gauge would bottom out. Please give any advice possible here I'm needing to get back on the road in this thing as soon as possible!
No I have not. I will try that when I get home from work and let you know if that solves any of my problems! I'm open to any suggestions at this point
I gave that a whirl this evening. Unfortunately no luck though. It does seem to run better, but definitely still not driveable. The passenger side exhaust makes no sound while the engine is running and blows cool air. Tomorrow evening I'm gonna start replacing ignition coils and the dreaded spark plugs and go from there. I attached a picture of the codes my scanner picked up, so I feel like I'm headed in the right direction. Still, any advice is welcome.
Those codes indicate a possible wiring issue. I'd start inspecting the harness for damage or chew marks.
I've glanced at the wiring a few times and nothing has stood out to me, but I'll go through it with a fine tooth comb this evening. I'm glad you took a look at the codes and tried to find a connection with all of them. I pulled the codes, but still too inexperienced to decipher the underlying problem. Thank you
