I have a sixties-era 240 six cylinder, kinda worn out. I try to change oil once a year but my problem is that the dipstick shrinks. Between oil changes. When I change oil and add the required new oil the dipstick expands to read normal, at the line.
What is going on? Does anyone have a link to somebody who makes dipsticks that do not shrink between oil changes?
your dipstick is not shrinking.
what is really happening is the oil pan is absorbing the oil as it breaks down with age. when it absorbs it, the pan expands making the oil read lower on the stick. when you drain the oil, the old oil drains out of the pan and it shrinks back to the size it is supposed to be.
this is a sign you are going too long between oil changes.
