Trailer brake controller issue / battery light
2005 F350 6.0 Lariat. Towing 5th wheel trailer. Trailer brake controller (Primus IQ) started showing short "SH" and power loss "PL" error codes. The dash battery light would also intermittently appear and then go out. At this point, there was very little braking power at the trailer even with full gain and the manual being squeezed. This happened twice, once in a parking lot and then on a highway off-ramp both times rpm had dropped to near idle. Moved truck/trailer to a parking lot to look at closer and the codes went away and trailer brakes were fine. Checked out the wiring harness from front to back and didn't find any breaks. I got the trailer home with no other issues and then had the alternator tested - idle volts were 12.3 / load was 13.5.
the only other possible clue is we had spent 3 bone breaking hours riding on routes 81 and 84 in northeastern PA - everything that wasn't bolted down was shaken loose. Should I be looking for a grounding issue or could it be as simple as the alternator going bad? The alternator is a stock 110 amp.
Thanks,
Dave
