I switched the plug on my car trailer from a 6 hole round plug to a 7 way blade style so i wouldn't have to use an adapter. I was having troubles with the 06 f350 factory brake controller keeping and saying trailer disconnected before. I thought there was a loose connection in the adapter so i took that out of the equation. Now i can't get the truck to recognize the trailer at all. It says trailer fault when i turn the truck on. I checked all truck fuses and they are good.
Testing the trailer. How can i test the trailer brakes without being hooked up? I pulled the emergency brake connector hooked to the truck pulled forward and the brakes did not apply. So i checked the battery and it was at less than a volt. I re-did the trailer brake grounds. I am going to get a new trailer battery as we speak. Will that fix my issue?
Update, i put a new battery in it, and got the trailer brakes working with pulling the break away switch. Hooked up to the truck and the brake controller is not recognizing the trailer.
How can i test the truck side? All the lights work on the trailer when hooked to the truck.
Do you have an amp meter? The trailer brake circuit should be drawing 3 amps per brake wheel when the manual brake is actuated.
You may want to recheck your wiring to make sure everything is right. The brake wire should be blue, and it is the first pin clockwise from the alignment notch when you look in from the plug side. You should see a couple volts on that pin, but i don't remember how much. Since your emergency brake battery was dead, you may want to check the battery charging circuit (3rd pin clockwise from the alignment notch) and the ground, which is the pin directly opposite the charging circuit.
I got everything figured out. Apparently when i swapped the plug from a 6 hole to a 7 blade i got 2 of the colors mixed. Which would explain the blown fuse. The trailer only uses 5 prongs though. That normal? Doesn't use the 12v or the auxiliary. Its a car trailer with electric brakes.
Running lights, right turn, left turn, brake, common ground. That is all you really need. The other prongs are for options, like reverse lights. Just put the e-brake battery on the charger a couple times a year.
