A class is probably the best but I started reading books and just went to it. Arc, mig, gas, and tig. Check out http://www.hobartwelders.com

They have some good forums. Also http://aws.org

learning to weld

I learned to weld in High School then took some night school classes at the local Technical School. It took a while but it didn't cost a lot and the certificates are real.

Go around to all your freind's shops/garages and get every kind of scrap metal they have. Then after you read-up/learn from the books/schooling then you have plenty of practicing material. First I would get a DC machine (arc) and get my hand in on that. Start out with 6011 rods (1/8" diameter). You will find at first that you have to learn how to set the heat (amperage) for each rod and thickness of metal. A good rule of thumb: Use the fractional diameter of the welding rod as a starting point then fine tune the amperage to suit your hand. Example 1/8" rod = 125 amps. You also will have to learn how to watch the puddle instead of the arc, but that comes with time. The main thing is learning the right way the first time - then you won't have to be de/re-programmed later.
