Running problems

Hi, my dad owns a Ford F-150 4x2 shortbed with EFI 5.0 302 V8 with dual fuel tanks. We ran into a problem during the Winter. The truck would choke as if it was running rich and would shoot flames easily. We are running a straight pipe setup but it shouldn't be shooting flames. Second problem is that the first gas tank is sending the gas backwards to the tank towards the back. We do need the switch and LMC truck does not have the correct switch. We replaced the pump on the first tank. Any help or advice will be appreciated!

What year is this truck and what mpg is it getting?

Well, it could be running rich.
Check and post the available codes.
I suggest you check the compression on all cylinders.
I suspect you may get a code for the O2 sensor.
