Ok guys. Truck is a 1996 f250 460. Rear drum brakes are new. Replaced all springs, drums, and pads about 4 months ago. Seems like when i pull our pop up camping trailer the rear brakes seem to drag only after i pull the trailer. 1st it was the right rear. Got to where we were going and could smell the brake dragging. Took wheel off drum off and backed the adjuster to where it needed to be. Just a slight drag on the drum as you put it back on. Everything was fine for a couple weeks just driving truck around. Then went to pull trailer again and the left rear drum dragged this time and not the right side. Did the same thing correcting the drum and shoe adjustment. Not sure whats going on? Anyone have anything? I made sure that when i replaced the brakes i did 1 side at a time to make sure all hardware goes where it should. I even dou le checked everything this last time it happened and all is where it should be. I can drive around town no problems. Its just pulling trailer... they seem to be over adjusting themselves. Suggestions? Wheel cylinders?
Fluid is new. Did that about 6 months ago ehen i did front brakes. I did 1 side at a time for reference. I also did the brake hardware. Emergency cable is great. At first thought it could be that. So stopped using it to see if thats causing issue. And truck still has done this. Again. Its only when i pull the trailer. I can drive truck all over and thier just fine. Its only pulling the trailer. Wheel cylinders are not new. Thought that could be issue. But again it only does this when towing.
It seems it would have to be either you are using the brake harder or using the brake more often when towing. Still I can't reason it out beyond wrong parts or wrong installation.
Kindof ironic but I've probably had more sticking calipers than drum problems over the decades.
Maybe a wheel cylinder if one piston was sticking and making the other shoe wear more and adjust too much??? I'm reaching.
I did one side at a time. I couldnt have got parts mixed up.the shoes arent even wearing differently. That i can see. Before i installed the new shoes i made sure parts were all the same as what came off. The shoes are also marked for installation. So pretty hard to put them on any other way. Im pretty OCD when it comes to that. Adjusters were also working as they should when installed them too. When i installed everything i also made sure nothing is binding or hitting something else.
Keep thinking wheel cylinders. But never seen cylinders have this issue. I thought too that maybe slowing the extra weight down, the line pressure increases and for what ever reason the cylinders extend farther and then the adjusters do what they are supposed to. then when pressure goes away, they are over adjusted?
Ya. I hear that. My buddy owns VanCleve Ford here by me so inasked him over the weekend while we were camping. He was going to check with his mechanic, just tonsee what he might think it could be. I have to lean towards wheel cylinders. Only because everything else has been replaced.
No. The self adjusters werent replaced. They were done on the last brake job and were in good working order. I did take them apart cleaned them up, cleaned the threads up, put alittle anti sieze on them just because and they worked smooth.
I had a similar experience with my 94 a couple years ago. I had somehow put the brake shoes on the wrong side as they are two different sizes, one forward one for rearward. Its a small difference but it caused them to drag after a little while. Once they did that, it overheated the wheel cylinder on that side.
Ya. You havr a trailing and leading shoe. I checked all that the last time i took drums off just to make sure i didnt screw that up, but all is good there. Whats wierd is it only seems to do it when pulling trailer.
Update. I went home yesterday after work. Tore into the rear drums. They still werent locked up from the last time i readjusted them. But i havent pulled the trailer since then either. Talked to mechanic at Ford dealer. Said to take the emergency brake arm and hardware off and clean it all up and use caliper pin grease to make sure all the parts move freely. I did that. Put back together. Drove to work this morning. Came around a corner and a dog was in the street. Stopped pretty hard and the left rear brake locked for a split second. Didnt seem to apply the brake hard enough to lock it up. Seemed pretty touchy. Finished the drive to work about another mile or so. Checked to see if brakes were dragging or i could smell them and they werent hot or frozen. I have rear ABS so is it usual for a brake to lock up even forna split second with ABS?
