Question regarding oil pressure

I have a stock 92 f150 with a 4.9l 6 that I'm planning to drive cross country tow ing a trailer(moving from south Carolina to utah). My oil pressure gauge likes to bounce crazily unless it's under acceleration. Put a new oil sending unit on and it bounced less but is still bouncing. Put a liberal amount of dielectric grease on the electric connection and now its hot or miss. Sometimes it is sold as a rock, sometimes it bounces around. There are no leaks and the engine runs smoothly and with good power. Any ideas on what could be wrong and should I be concerned?

An aftermarket mechanical gauge costs little and would be a good diagnostic. It sounds like you have an electrical issue, but before towing a long way I would want some more reliable info.
